About the Job
The Marine AC Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of marine air conditioning and refrigeration systems on luxury yachts. This role requires expert knowledge of marine HVAC systems, chillers, and environmental control systems, along with the ability to diagnose complex problems and deliver reliable solutions that meet the exacting standards of the yachting industry. The Marine AC Technician works both independently and in collaboration with other technicians and departments to ensure optimal climate control and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, service, repair, and maintain marine air conditioning systems, chillers, and refrigeration units on yachts ranging from 50 to 300 ft.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot complex AC/HVAC system failures using diagnostic tools and technical manuals.
- Perform preventative maintenance on marine climate control systems to ensure reliability and efficiency.
- Work with various marine AC brands including Cruisair, MarinAire, Dometic, and other industry-standard systems.
- Install and commission new AC systems, including ductwork, condensers, evaporators, and control systems.
- Handle refrigerants safely and in compliance with EPA regulations; perform leak detection and repair.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications.
- Test system performance, adjust controls, and optimize efficiency for marine environments.
- Work with electrical systems related to AC operation, including breakers, contactors, and control panels.
- Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and other technical departments on integrated projects.
- Maintain accurate service records and documentation of work performed.
- Ensure all work complies with ABYC standards, manufacturer specifications, and safety regulations.
- Maintain and clean tools, equipment, and work areas.
- Communicate effectively with customers regarding system issues, repair options, and maintenance recommendations.
- Work independently with minimal supervision to complete service calls and projects on schedule.
- Respond to emergency service calls and troubleshoot urgent system failures.
- Stay current with new technologies and advances in marine HVAC systems.
Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of experience working on marine air conditioning and refrigeration systems, preferably on yachts or commercial vessels.
- EPA Universal Certification (Section 608) required.
- Strong knowledge of marine HVAC systems, chillers, refrigeration cycles, and climate control technology.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical and mechanical components of AC systems.
- Experience with marine AC brands such as Cruisair, MarinAire, Dometic, Webasto, or similar systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Skilled in the use of HVAC diagnostic tools, manifold gauges, leak detectors, and multimeters.
- Knowledge of refrigerant handling, recovery, and charging procedures.
- Familiarity with marine electrical systems (12V, 24V, 120V, 240V).
- High School Diploma or GED required; HVAC technical certification preferred.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
- Must own and maintain the proper tools to perform job duties.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining high quality standards and attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to diagnose complex system issues.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, engine rooms, and tight compartments.
- Comfortable working in marine environments and able to work on vessels at dock or on the hard.
